Remarkably
Adaptable
The Town of
Newburgh recently completed a $1 million restoration of its
Old Town Hall.
Built in 1851 as the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church, the landmark’s rich history marked many town milestones
including the Civil War, when the bell in its tower called the
Home Guard to assembly. In 1965, officials bought the church
for use as a Town Hall. It served as Newburgh’s seat of government and focal point of its picturesque downtown until
2005, when a new government facility was
constructed.
The landmark’s
status as community favorite remains secure. With help from a
$15,000 grant from the Central Indiana Community Foundation’s
Efroymson Fund and a $500,000 Community Focus Fund Grant from
the Indiana Office of Rural Affairs, the newly rechristened
“Preservation Hall” opened in April 2008 as a museum and community
facility. The Town of Newburgh hosted an open house at
Preservation Hall on April 20, 2008.
